'No decision' on travellers' camp (BBC news 15/12/08)
'No decision' on travellers' camp
Officials at a Leicestershire council have insisted a final decision about a possible travellers' site is still months away.
Some residents in the village of Groby have already opposed a transit camp in their area.
Hinckley and Bosworth District Council said a decision would not be made until a public consultation was finished.
Council spokesman Trevor Prowse said a study was under way but no sites had been confirmed.
Empty fields
Some residents, already protesting after a leaked report showed sites in the village, said they would fight any plans for a travellers' camp.
Resident Chris Moore said: "We all know government have got to do something for them [the travellers] - we are not against that.
"But why put it in the middle of a housing estate right next door to a cemetery when we've got fields empty near Hinckley and Bosworth?"
A list of possible sites will be sent to the council on 20 January and the proposals will then be put out to public consultation.
Mr Prowse said the work was part of a two-year-long process to provide facilities for travellers in the district.
