Traveller site controversy rages on
Jan 30 2009 by Sam Dimmer
THE CONTROVERSY surrounding plans to place 49 travellers’ pitches in the borough shows no sign of dying down - more than a week after a heated council meeting.
Politicians from every party have clashed on the issue, blaming each other for the situation.
During last Tuesday’s meeting borough council leader David Bill suggested that Conservative members of the East Midlands Regional Assembly were to blame for forcing the area to take a disproportionate number of travellers and gypsies.
But in a statement issued to The Hinckley Times, Andrew Pritchard , the director of planning and transport at the assembly, blamed the borough council.
He said that the 49 pitch proposal was based on a document which was jointly put together by every local authority in the county, including Hinckley and Bosworth.
The borough council has not met assembly representatives to discuss the issue but has made representations, and Cllr Bill has issued a further question to the assembly.
Cllr Bill states: “All we are seeking is an equitable distribution and fair treatment for our residents across the borough.”
Burbage county councillor Mary Sherwin has written to borough council chief executive Steve Atkinson outlining her concerns.
She is also stressed that a proposal to place a travellers’ site on Rugby Road in Burbage was not dead, even though it was not included in the borough council’s list of “preferred options”.
Cllr Sherwin (Con, Burbage Castle) who watched the meeting from the public gallery, said: “Very little of the base document was discussed, including a large proposed site on Rugby Road in Burbage.
“Not one member mentioned this site, including any of the elected members for Burbage on the council - Burbage people were short changed.
“The whole process prior to the document coming before council was flawed.”
Cllr Peter Batty (Groby, Ind) has said that the council treated the borough’s residents with “contempt”.
